Bevrijdingsmuseum Zeeland

The Liberation Museum sets itself the task of caring for, preserving, and exhibiting – in a resporsible way – the objects that represent the cultural inneritarace from the fighting that took place in the period 1939 – 1945 in Zeeland, and the actions in the Dutch East Indies in the period 1945 – 48 where forces from Zeeland took part.

Who Do You Think You Are? The dressed family (2011/2012)

Clothing not only protects against the elements but also says something about the wearer. In the familiy exhibition entitled Who Do You Think You Are? The dressed family, the Zuiderzee Museum displays the various functions of clothing – past and present.

In the context of various themes, the visitor comes to stand face to face with authentic local traditional costume, the everyday outfits of modern people from Enkhuizen, and extraordinary stories from the past and the present. Is football typically something for boys? How can you see if someone is rich? By posing these questions, the whole family can find out in a playful way how closely clothing and identity are linked. Visitors are invited to get down to work themselves and thus make a contribution to the exhibition.

For example, visitors can gape at a miscellany of clothing items from the past and the present, or leave their biggest clothing secrets behind in the exhibition. A visit to the exhibition is an experience that inspires and challenges, and helps in finding an answer to the question that everybody poses at some time is his or her life: who am I?

Gone with the Wind (2009)

The exhibition Gone with the Wind in the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen
(22 March – 25 October 2009) shows work by dozens of high-profile Dutch designers of fashion, jewellery and accessories, stylists, photographers and illustrators. Together they give an inspiring picture of the wealth of ideas latent in the Dutch world of fashion and how it relates to the Dutch dress tradition. The renowned fashion designers Alexander van Slobbe and Francisco van Benthum act as guest curators.

In Gone with the Wind the creative ideas of the Dutch world of fashion are central. In a unique way this exhibition combines contemporary designs with traditional costumes and objects from the Museum collection. At twenty locations in the Museum and the Museum Park, new and old designs visualize typically Dutch themes, such as the ‘Orange’ festivities in honour of the Royal Family and the use of bright floral patterns in traditional costumes. In the Bontekoe’s Cabin Boys room, Dutch designers of men’s fashion such as Francisco van Benthum, Lucas Ossendrijver (Lanvin) and Ivo Mittelmeijer display a modern vision on tradional men’s wear. In the Vouwdrama room designer Mark Lentelink presents garments from traditional costume and from the international world of fashion where folding is central, as it once was in Staphorst. Illustrators Piet Paris and Peter Jeroense have designed variations on the typically Dutch tile.
